Yule marks the winter solstice... the shortest day and longest night of the year. Yule ceremonies/celebrations come from ancient cultures the world over. At the heart of it all... fear that the failing sunlight would never return from the darkness unless vigil was kept with lighting candles and decorating with the few plants that continue to thrive... holly, evergreens, and mistletoe.
