VA Beach and Some Art

During our trip to Virginia Beach, we stayed with Nikko. She cooked us a Japanese feast and took Enid and I shopping at several different types of Asian markets, including a Filipino bakery (man that pan de sal was awesome!). While shopping at MacArthur Center as we always do during a visit (mostly for the Sanrio store), Enid spotted some shoes she wanted in the Vans store. Considering they are the same price we'd pay for Stride Rites in the outlet, I got them for her. "Mommy look!! They're just like my Hot Wheels!!"

We ate at Jalisco Mexican restaurant the first night in town. Boy do they put the feed bag on you there... and for a decent price! Nikko made Enid do funny poses by the fountain. Can you tell her kids weren't around for her to pose? (She's a photographer.)

Enid has been a carousel kid since she was able to sit on a horse, so of course she rode one at Greenbrier Mall in Chesapeake AND she rode the two-story one at Lynnhaven Mall with her daddy just like last year. Her love of horsey stuff is strange to me. Don't get me wrong, I like carousels and My Little Pony too, but I've always had this light aversion to horses. Enid on the other hand, would probably love to own a real one.

After unpacking and sorting laundry, Enid asked me to take this photo. I told her she looked like she was in a coffin, but she said she was in a boat.

According to Viktor Lowenfeld (well-known to those who study children or art and education), Enid is in the pre-schematic stage of drawing. All of a sudden there are these representational attempts to create recognizable images. Generally, that stage is around ages 4 - 7, so she's not too far off. Below you can see her ballerina with an orange tutu, long arms, and she even gave her toes! She also drew mountains "with blue water on top so when winter comes they can turn white".
