"Obama Pledge Stirs Hope in Early Education" - New York Times

This is good stuff. Good stuff indeed.

On Wednesday, the New York Times published an article that stated Obama has pledged $10 billion for early childhood education. That will be be the largest federal initiative for early education since Head Start began in 1965. All I can say is that it's about freaking time!

Research has proven that quality in early childhood education is worth the investment to society in the long run. One study states that for every dollar invested in early childhood, $7-$10 will return to society. Aren't children important enough for this investment? AND This is not just an investment in academics. Most of us know that quality and compassionate care includes positive child guidance, critical thinking, and health issues as well. THE WHOLE CHILD, as we call it in the field.

I just hope that Obama can keep up his end of the bargain, or at least work pretty darn hard for it. I actually felt a little pride for a moment after reading that article.

**ETA***  Rae Pica posted on her blog that "If pay is any indication, we have more regard in this country for parking lot attendants than for early childhood professionals. Perhaps Mr. Obama's focus on early education will create a much-needed paradigm shift."
