Putting Family First
I read the funniest thing (though it wasn't intended to be) on the Putting Family First site. It started with the line "We Live In the Minivan, I Might As Well Decorate!". That made me think about all of those parents we've met who do drive around in "a rolling Wal-Mart with cases of snacks and drinks" etc.
So many families have to be intentional about giving their children free play these days. Remember when we were young and just about all we did was free play at home? It was spontaneous, creative, full of wonder... Now the only wonder some people offer their children is what activity will we go to next?

As a child there was so little about my day that was structured. I played as I wanted, and it WAS creative, and full of wonder. I had a wonderful imagination because of it, and when the neighbor kids were involved it was always spontaneous. I can't recall never not having fun every day. I'm not sure that exists at all anymore.
mud pies, toad holes, climbing trees, hiding under umbrellas (remember those huge dome-like ones??), splashing in a puddle...
Enid actually just go done splashing herself. Man, she's soaked from the knees down.
All of that, all of that and more. We find something to play with, out of nothing! My personal favorite, cardboard.
Gosh, splashing in the rain sounds wonderful right now.
Cardboard boxes are great, aren't they? I always loved making forts inside too. You know... a blanket over a table or some chairs. Enid likes doing that beside her bed.
