Week of the Young Child 2010 (April 11-17)

The theme for 2010 is Early Years Are Learning Years. At first, I really didn't like this theme because so much is misconstrued about early childhood education and pushing academics early. Early isn't always better in this case and kids need to be kids first and foremost. BUT Upon looking into this year's theme a little further, I realized that it could mean so much more. One of the "subthemes" is Play: Where Learning Begins, and to me that is one of the most important issues that is overlooked far too often. I see it every week in my Kindergarten practicum and it saddens me to no end. Other "subthemes" include Embracing Diveristy, Teachers Matter, and Encouraging Health & Fitness. Not so bad when I see it put like that.
Do something this week to make a teacher or caregiver feel appreciated. If it's genuine, it will make someone's day! And of course don't forget the little people.
