a festival, a concert, a puppet show, a play, a conference, and a cat

I have been pretty busy with school lately and haven't been taking the time to post. We're still alive and kicking and doing well. Here's a tiny update.

We went to the Greek Festival at the state fairgrounds one Friday night a couple of weeks ago. (I am using it to write an assignment for the Families in Global Perspective course.) The line waiting to simply get into the expo building was all the way down the sidewalk, which is pretty darn long. We had eaten dinner before we went, so thankfully we didn't have to wait in that long line. We did, however, get some baklava and chocolate bread for dessert later that night. There were so many neat things to look at all around, but we got stuck at the first booth for quite some time. They were selling nesting dolls and ornaments mostly. There were a ton of different styles and designs to choose from, including traditional, pop culture, religious, and I kid you not... John Malkovich. Enid couldn't decide which one she wanted, so we finally moved on and went back later. She ended up with a Hansel & Gretel set, and we also got a blank set that we've been painting ourselves. I'll post photos when they're finished. I bought something to use for my Halloween costume too. There was live music and dancing too, so we had a good time.

The next day, Sarah and Phoebe came for a visit, and we all went to the They Might Be Giants kids concert at the NC Museum of Art. They had said cameras and open containers etc would not be allowed in, but when we got there, no one was checking bags (but the man was standing there at the bag check table) and people had cameras and food galore. Next time, I'll know to take whatever I want (but then they'll be checking probably!). It was a fun show... they played some old hits as well as some from their newest kids album "Here Comes Science". We had a yummy dinner and a nice visit with the Preziosos too.

The next weekend, we took Enid to Emerson Waldorf School for a puppet show. I think she really loved it, and while we were there she asked if she could see her classroom. I think she decided it was the place for her as soon as she ran into the Kindergarten playground and saw tire swings and persimmon trees. I hope we make it to their other puppet shows this year and to the holiday faire.

I attended the play "Having Our Say" at the Imperial Centre in Rocky Mount for one of my theater assignments. If you haven't seen the play or TV movie, I highly recommend it. I want to read the Delany sisters books now! How amazing.... they lived more than 100 years each and saw so much American history.

This past Friday and Saturday, I was at the NCaeyc Study Conference in Raleigh. Sarah and I hosted a workshop that we called "Community Garden Project". The participants were very receptive and all of them seemed excited about getting gardens going at their own preschools and child development centers, so our mission was accomplished. The 3 year old teacher from the NCC Child Development Center, Cherie, took this photo for us.

Just to end this on a fuzzy note, here's Inari sleeping at the bottom of the stairs.
